For families thinking of getting a video game console, there may be some things to consider before picking a particular game system. Today, gaming involves a lot more than a couple kids sitting cross legged on the floor in front of the television with their game controllers in hand. Game consoles like the Nintendo Wii console and now the Xbox Kinect get people involved physically, moving and jumping and swinging and throwing to control the game on the screen.

Getting these games installed might require a little advance planning on your part, depending on the size of your home, where you plan to install the game console, and other considerations. For example, with these physical movement games, putting them in a small room like a tiny bedroom just might not work. Make sure that swinging arms won’t hit walls or doors! You also want to make sure there’s enough room so that nothing will get knocked over or broken when excited children are bounding around during game play.

Another consideration is all the features that are available to game console owners if they also have a wireless network in the home. For example, the Wii has Internet access, and a shopping channel, where you can download additional Wii games. But you have to have the wireless network, and take the time to hook it up. Xbox and PlayStation also have online access, and players can join multiplayer games over the Net to play people around the world or friends across town. It’s not hard to set up, most consoles will walk you through the process on the screen, but not everyone has a home wireless network set up.

While these might not seem like major issues, for some families, especially with young children, you want to make sure that gaming at home can be both fun and safe.

In other words, how come video games are so much better on PS3 or XBox or Wii, etc.? Why can’t they make equally good games for the computer so that I don’t have to have both a computer and a game system?
