When you think of becoming a video game tester, you probably picture yourself sitting in a chair all day, playing video games, having fun, and receiving a fat pay check. It sounds glamorous doesn’t it, not doing any real “work” and getting paid for it. Well gamers, I’m hear to tell you that this is not the case, especially if you have little or no experience as a video game tester.

In reality, a novice video game tester makes around $10 – $15 dollars an hour. On top of that it may also be hard to find jobs due to the fact that big game companies won’t deal with you. So on average, as a beginner, you will probably make $250 – $300 a week. The rate of pay for any tester all depends on the types of skills they know and the amount of experience they have. For example, the only way someone could earn $80 an hour is if they were an expert video game programmer who has over 10 years of experience. So obviously as a beginner with no experience and only a basic knowledge a video games, it will be hard to get high paying jobs. Although this is the case for most novice game testers, there are ways to get hooked up with the big game companies and higher paying jobs early on.

All you have to do is become a member of a game testing site. They will help you find the best jobs and give you everything you need to maximize your income as a video game tester. You have to be careful because though because there are some game testing sites out there that are scams and will do nothing but steal your money. But if you do find a good honest video game testing site, then you can usually get you your first job in under a week! Also with the high quality customer support and guides that these sites offer you will have no trouble finding a job that pays good money.

After you get your first job the game company will send you a game and an assignment. The assignment can be anything from taking a survey on the game to finding bugs within the game. Some time these tasks can get boring and tedious, although in my opinion it is well worth the pay. Just remember not to give up no matter how tough it gets because as you test more and more games, you will start earning more and more money.

Video game tester is one of the most demanding job profiles in today’s scenario. It has created a craze among all generations of people to earn some fast bucks without the need of any educational qualifications. But there is one major qualification that a wannabe video game tester must possess and that is s/he must be a game freak.

For a beginner, it might be quite tough to get into the profession but with a little research you can get easy access to video game testing jobs. And once you get access to it, getting a job as a game tester is a child’s play. This is one such job profile where an average game tester can earn as much as $ 40,000. Though it does not require any qualifications but it is no different from any other jobs.

To be a great game tester, there are some steps which you must be aware of. Get to know these steps to equip yourself with the qualities of being a great video game tester.

1) Before you go ahead with your job, make sure to go through the guidelines and the procedures to be followed minutely. This will be helpful in shedding more light in the type of work you are going to perform and what are the things expected from you. You will be required to give them your feedback as per their instructions. Deadline must be met strictly and a standard format must be followed while submitting the assessment.

2) Keep in mind that being a game tester involves more than playing it for fun. You will need to adopt different strategies in order to examine every aspect of the game. Be alert while playing the game and try to figure out even the slightest problem that you noticed while playing the game.

3) Make sure to take down notes, as you continue to test the game. These notes are important as you will have to make the report based on these notes. Always make it a point to be concrete and describe in detail about the bugs and glitches that you have come across while playing the game.

4) Every bit of information that you collect is valuable and will be helpful for the programmers to rectify the problem. In any case if you ever come across a bug then try to recreate it and find out the reason behind it. Make sure to give each and every detail of the bug like its location, level, character and other related information. Also take note of any errors like misspelling, discoloration, error in graphics and music/sound.

5) If you complete the assessment of the game well before the deadline then make it a point to start playing the game right from the beginning. This way you will be able to ensure that you have not missed out on any part of the game. Prepare your final report and include all the information that you have collected no matter how small it may seem. Your report must be well organized and professional.

Also it is important to know that the type of games that you play will determine the type of companies for you to apply. With these tips handy, you can be a go getter and move on to become one of the most successful video game tester.

If you like to play all the newly released video games, and have the patience to sit and
play them all the way through to the end many, many times, than you may very well have
what it takes to become a paid video game tester. Regardless of what you may have heard
to the contrary, you don’t necessarily have to have a college degree to become a video
game tester. You have to be able to convince the company that you have a good eye for
detail, and that you can sit and play the games until all of the bugs have been found, but
beyond that, there are no real requirements for getting the job. Teenagers as young as 15
years of age have landed positions with leading game producing companies as video
game testers, don’t you think you could to?

All of the video games that you will be sent you are allowed to keep. So, not only do you
get paid for doing a fun, cool job, but you get all of the latest and greatest video games
without ever having to pay one cent out of pocket, how cool is that? Depending on the
company that hires you, it is possible to make up to $80 per hour for playing video
games. The average starting pay for someone with no documented experience as a video
game tester is $9.00. Another advantage you have is that if you get to work from home,
you can put in as many hours as you would like, as long as your company approves them.
You could work 80 hours per week just playing video games and giving feedback, if you
got it approved and chose to do so. That would be a great way to pay yourself out of debt,
or just put back some money for a rainy day, considering that anything more than 40
hours a week is considered overtime, and you would be paid time and half. Someone who
makes $9.00 an hour would be earning $12.50 per hour for every hour over 40 they work.

Video game producers depend in video game testers to tell them about their games, and
take to heart suggestions made by their testers. For example, if you decide that the
monsters in the game need to look more realistic, and then tell them when you fill out
your form, because someone else who might buy the game later on might feel the same
way. If there is a part of the game that is too difficult for the average player to pass, then
you should also voice your opinion about that, as it would likely make consumers
unhappy with the product, therefore reflecting badly on the producer, meaning loss of
potential revenue, which they cannot afford.

You may not always be able to work from home, you may be required to go to a video
game testing center located near your home, and perform your work there. It all depends
on the company’s business practices, some will send the games to you via regular mail,
and allow you to test them from your home, it varies widely.

When you complete your testing on one game, and turn your feedback in, you will
usually receive your paycheck within about a week. Some employers will pay you via
PayPal, some direct deposit into your checking account, and some will send you a paper
check through the mail, again varying depending on what company you are working for
and their standard protocols.

You may have seen different advertisements on the Internet saying you can make $300 or more an hour as a beta tester for video games. Is this true? Not usually. Typically, when you see an advertisement like this, it is giving you a “fantasy scenario,” as most game testers don’t make anywhere near that. In this article, I will give you a realistic approach on how much money you can get paid to play video games.

First of all, you can earn as much — or as little — as you want. The fact of the matter is, if you want to earn more, you just have to work more and build up a reputation as a high-quality video game tester. If you can do that, you will not be limited to the amount of games you can test. In reality, you’ll only be limited to the amount of jobs you can handle, as well as by the time you can devote to this.

Many people test video games in their spare time, as a way to earn some extra cash on the side. Those part-timers usually feel that it ruins the gaming experience if they test too many hours a week. Other people, however, are more motivated and work up to 60 to 80 hours a week doing this for money. For them, the paychecks will be significantly larger and much more pleasing to the eye.

In addition, your reputation matters as well. If you can provide high-quality feedback and become known as a game tester who works hard and always completes every assignment handed to him, then naturally you will qualify for more jobs and command a higher testing fee.

At the same time, your skill level will also help determine how much money you earn per hour. If you’re able to go through a game very quickly and beat it without much effort, then you can devote drastically lower amounts of time to your game testing. In layman’s terms: the better you are at playing video games, the more money you can make every hour as a paid game tester.

So even though most gamers will never make $300 an hour, it is very possible to make at least $40-$80 an hour testing games for companies. Anyway you slice it, that’s not a bad fee for testing and playing video games all day long.

Yes you can become wildly successful as a video game tester and yes you can create a full time income from testing video games if you do it right and do the right jobs, BUT, you shouldn’t be paying someone in order to get into a job. That is where these programs become dodgy. Why should you pay to get into a job when the only way to get the job is absolutely free? I did some research on one of these companies called game tester guide, and have come up with the following results.

The truth about video game testing programs

There used to be a sponsor named Alex Lum, but after being bashed as not legit, the sponsor was quickly changed. Now there is a new sponsor named Matt Lankard! This sponsor claims to be a successful video game tester, and when he shows you the checks that he makes, it’s signed by a company called Lumco LLC. Namely, as I did some more research, I found that the checks themselves were being signed by Alex Lum to Alex Lum. With more research, I have this evidence to be reoccurring in different examples. As a quick search for Alex Lum on Google, his biographies say that he’s a “successful video game tester”. Since he’s not a company owner, than how is it that his name seems to be coming up whenever you search up Lumco LLC on Google, turns out, it comes up as squat and is only flooded with a bunch of websites saying how the company is null and inreputable. Sad to say it people, but you cannot make $80 from video game testing. The starting pay is actually close to minimum pay, which is sad, but it is true. however you can make about $15 and hour if you become a game tester/quality assurance depending on the games budget. You do not get paid in paychecks when doing testing. It gets wired into your bank account. Do you think that companies would be dumb enough to simply stick a check into your mail box? I’ve seen maybe a few companies do it, but usually they just wire it in. So then why are people getting paid in checks from the game tester guide website?

Video game testing programs are scams that shouldn’t be touched with when you can join gaming companies as a tester for free rather than paying more than $40.

Seems a lot of people these days are interested in becoming paid video game testers. With all the excitement surrounding the release of the latest gaming consoles like the PS3 and Nintendo Wii, this is no surprise. So let’s take a look at the different types of jobs that are available for gamers.

Job 1: Self-Employed Video Game Tester

Everyday people are searching online for information and reviews about the latest game releases. Some very smart gamers are filling that demand by putting up their own websites and blogs and writing reviews of games as they play them. They also include tips, screenshots and more that their visitors will find useful. By adding Google Adsense ads or other advertiser’s ads to their websites, they’ve created their own video game testing business that makes money everyday – just for playing games and telling others about it!

Job 2: Freelance Video Game Tester

Some gamers with a bit more experience and motivation take things up a notch. These gamers actively seek out companies who produce games and offer to test their upcoming release for bugs, playability and other features. This type of work pays very well, but requires the video game tester to be able to communicate and write very clearly – and also to be very punctual. As a freelance video game tester, you’ll be expected to play unreleased games from the comfort of your own home, provide written feedback as instructed by the developer and return this information within a specified time frame. Your reward for this? A big fat paycheck by mail!

Job 3: Full-time Corporate Game Tester

It is also possible to get hired by large game developers for a full time game testing position. These are the ultimate dream jobs for many gamers, but are very difficult to get. They require a high level of communication and writing skills plus plenty of experience. On the other hand, the reward is that much greater too – a high paying, secure, full-time job doing what you enjoy most – gaming! Many gamers build up the experience needed to get these types of positions by working as freelance video game testers until they’ve built up a solid resume of completed assignments.

As you can see, there are many ways to make money playing video games. A bit of time spent sharpening up your writing skills combined with your interest in gaming and a desire to share your knowledge with others can easily add up to a great job!

With the rapid growth of the gaming industry and the interest in game development and design, there is now a need for more game testers. Game testers are responsible for identifying bugs in games as a part of the quality assurance process before a game is released to the public. Testing is performed close to end of the development of the game and after the game has been released to ensure that any bugs can be corrected. These jobs are very illusive however, as they are usually offered to programmers, experts in the field and persons who were involved in testing earlier versions of the game. The first time video game tester can earn up to $25,000 annually, however more experienced testers can earn up to $70,000 annually.

Apart from what has been explained so far, there are a number of characteristics of video game testing that you need to know before you consider getting into the field:

Video game testing is a tedious job, requiring hours of playing and analyzing the same levels/stages of a game for up to nine hours a day. It means going into every nook and cranny of each level to identify glitches in art and logic errors.

There can be a lot of paperwork, as developers will require testers to document the results of their tests. In some instances the results can be very difficult to explain and may require a very wordy description of the issue. Therefore you require good communication skills, both oral and written.

During the final stages of the development of games, just before its release, testers are usually required to work up to 12hrs a day.

Apart from beta testing, game testers sometimes are required to test games at a location designated by the developers. Work from home testing is available, but is very difficult to get.

You cannot get a job in game testing by just checking craigslist or any other job site for openings. Most testers get jobs by approaching developers or publishers directly. Professionalism is necessary and experience in video game testing is a plus. Additionally, don’t be shy to let them know your credentials, the consoles you have, your game rankings etc.

There is scope for upward mobility. The foregoing is dependent on how well you do in the projects you have. Some will be hired as a test manager if they have done well in the past as a tester and a test lead.

Since testing jobs are difficult to get, you may have to start as a beta tester (volunteer tester). If you are interested in becoming a beta tester, you may have some luck if you check bluesnews. Getting a beta testing job gives you some of the required experience to get a job as a paid tester.

Apart from testing game play, testers may be asked to test the functionality and ergonomics of controllers. You may even have to test the accessories like video cards and head sets.

If you want a game testing job, then you will have to be persistent. You should consider applying for many openings to increase your chances of being hired. Even if you do not get a response the first couple of times you apply for a game testing job, you should not give up.

Do video game tester jobs really pay that well is a burning question on many job searcher’s minds. If you have spent any length of time looking for jobs, full or part-time on the Internet, most likely you have seen or read about game testers earning hundreds of dollars per day, at home, simply game testing. Can this really be true or is it just a bunch of half-truths and advertising hype?

If you are in the process of searching for a new job, or looking for a way of earning additional income, at some point you want to know just how much money video game tester jobs pay. To put it another way “show me the money”!

Sadly, few if any game testing jobs pay you hundreds of dollars per day to sit at home and play. In reality, most surveys taken concerning video game testers jobs report that the average earning is in the range of $8 to $15 per hour (in the United States). Obviously this wage will vary if you live elsewhere in the world; most likely you will earn even less depending on your local minimum wage regulations.

Still the concept of making $8 to $15 per hour (more or less depending on your location) may still be appealing if you can work from home. Once again, this is idea of being a game tester at home, is generally wishful thinking and happens only rarely. (Unless your dad or mom owns the company!) Most paid games testing jobs require you to work on-site at the game developers’ testing facility. This is not surprising given the high security that surrounds the testing of new gaming products in a very competitive, multimillion dollar marketplace. As a games tester you will most likely have to sign a legal document stating that you will not discuss or publish any information about the game you are involved in testing or face the prospect of instant firing and possible criminal charges.

Yet another consideration if you are really serious about a job where you get paid to play video games is the length of steady employment. The fact about most entry level game testing jobs is that they are limited duration. This means that once the testing phase is over for the game you are working on; it is sent to market or scrapped due to too many problems, your employment is over. Think of it like being a fruit picker. Once the fruit season ends, so does your job. If you are lucky and have been a good worker, you may be put on another game testing project, however gaming companies often hire lots of extra testers at the last minute, just to get the product finished in time to meet their marketing deadline.

A final consideration are job benefits. Like most other careers, if you are not a full-time, permanent employee of the company or business, job benefits such as medical and health coverage are not provided until you are hired on full-time.

So to conclude, are video game tester jobs really that great? Probably not for someone who is looking to make a career as a games tester simply due to the low pay, lack of job security, and few company benefits. If however you are just looking to earn some extra spending money for doing something that you enjoy, such as playing video games, then a video game tester job may be a reasonable job to pursue.

At the risk of contradicting myself, it must be noted that there most certainly are people who start as entry level game testers and will over time work themselves into better paying positions that come with experience and quality job performance. So, yes, some people may use their video game tester jobs as a stepping stone into the gaming industry and in the end start to earn a good salary and benefits that come with management positions within the gaming company.
